Happy Earth Month From SAN
Envisioning the future at SAN

May is Bike Month!

Did you know that May is National Bike Month?

That’s right! Bike Month showcases the many benefits of bicycling and encourages people to give it a try. Biking is a fun and healthy transportation choice and there are lots of cool places to explore around our Airport by bike.

Marion Phelps
Enjoying Her Ride Into Work

We caught up with one of our colleagues who frequently bikes to work from her home in Coronado. You can see Marion Phelps, Environmental Specialist with the Planning & Environmental Affairs Department, riding along the scenic path that runs between the San Diego Bay waterfront and Spanish Landing Park. The ride takes her onto the Ferry, across the bay, and past the San Diego skyline before she uses a traffic-signaled crosswalk to cross North Harbor Drive to safely arrive at our Administration Building. For her, biking to work is fun and an opportunity to meet new people and see new things. She told us, “I love riding my bike—it only takes an extra half hour, I get fresh air and sunshine, and avoid traffic. I also save money on gas, insurance, and wear and tear on my car. I’ve made lifelong friendships by riding the ferry and I enjoy seeing happy people, face to face; along with the birds and trees.”

At the Airport, we have resources available for our two-wheeled guests. We’re also excited that the City of San Diego is repaving 3.3 miles of North Harbor Drive between Ash and Nimitz Boulevard in both directions. The project includes buffered bike lanes through striping modifications.

During the stay-home-order, San Diegans are still able to participate in outdoor activities such as walking, jogging, and biking as long as the social distancing requirement of six feet is followed and masks are worn outside the home. To stay active, why not try taking your bike out for a neighborhood cruise? Don’t have a bike of your own? Call your local bike shops and find out if they are renting or selling! The San Diego Union Tribune recently reported that San Diego bike shops are riding high with a sudden boom in sales.

One of the region’s largest bike-centric events that the Airport loves to participate in, Bike to Work Day, has been cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to working with SANDAG, our iCommute partner, next year when we can all enjoy a safe and healthy Bike to Work Day experience.

Happy Biking!
